Thematic Focus: The Summer Art Institutes
This conference was presented in conjunction with the inaugural exhibition at BMCM+AC’s new home at 120 College Street, Between Form and Content: Perspectives on Jacob Lawrence and Black Mountain College, curated by Julie Levin Caro and Jeff Arnal.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Leslie King Hammond
Dr. Leslie King Hammond delivered a keynote address, “The World of Jacob Lawrence.” Dr. Leslie King Hammond is an artist, curator, art historian, and Founding Director of the Center for Race and Culture at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she is also Graduate Dean Emeritus. Dr. King Hammond was a contributor to “Over the Line: The Art and Life of Jacob Lawrence” (2000) and “Jacob Lawrence, An Overview: Paintings from 1936-1994” (1995). Among many honors and awards, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Studio Museum in Harlem (NYC) in 2002, an artist grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2001, an Andy Warhol Foundation Curatorial fellowship in 2008, and the Alain Locke International Prize in 2010.
