Hailed by Rome's Il Tempo as 'the destiny of the cello', Michael Fitzpatrick's refined yet passionate style has connected with audiences from all walks of life around the world. He comes from a family of musicians and artists of Irish, Polish, Ukrainian, French and Catalonian descent that includes the legendary Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman, founder of The Israel Philharmonic, and Rose Bein Lerman, pianist with The Louisville Orchestra under its founder Maestro Robert Whitney. His foundational cello study was shaped by Scott Ballantyne, pedagogical heir to Leonard Rose. His formal musical studies occurred at The Cleveland Instituteme of Music, Northwestern University, Yale University and New York University. Fitzpatrick is the Founder & Executive Director of Millenia Music, which brings music to those in need while simultaneously producing concerts, recordings and films for the global audience.
Fitzpatrick is the recipient of the Prince Charles Award for musical excellence bestowed on behalf of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales by Gian Carlo Menotti at the Spoleto Festival in Spoleto, Italy. Featured on television on PBS' The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and on NPR/National Public Radio, he has performed as soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player across the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, the former Soviet Union and India – including performances at Lincoln Center, Town Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, the 92nd Street Y, the Smithsonian Institution, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds – in addition to national Broadway touring productions of Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera.
Michael Fitzpatrick conceived, produced and is the featured soloist of Millenia Music's groundbreaking COMPASSION recording featuring His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama, the voice of the late Thomas Merton, and chanting monks and musicians from East and West. COMPASSION was recommended for a Special Merit Award at the Grammy Awards in 2001, prompting EMI Jazz & Classics President & CEO Bruce Lundvall to state: "COMPASSION is at once both a prayer and an extraordinary aural celebration of brotherhood and world peace. It has the power to bring feelings of hope and human compassion to all who listen."
Fitzpatrick was instrumental in bringing together Nobel Peace laureate His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Muhammad Ali, 3-time heavyweight champion and United Nations Messenger of Peace. He performed for the United Nations Millennium Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders and for the Global Summit on Peace hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan which included performances at Bethany-beyond-the-Jordan, the Dead Sea and at the Royal Palace for His Majesty King Abdullah II. He performed for the Parliament of the World's Religions in Barcelona opening-ceremony in conjunction with Nobel Peace laureate Shirin Ebadi's keynote address. Most recently he performed for the Governor & First Lady's Derby Eve State Dinner in the Capitol Rotunda of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Michael Fitzpatrick served as Musical Advisor to Academy Award-winning filmmaker the late Robert Snyder on his final masterwork, CASALS: A Cry for Peace. Fitzpatrick's artistry has received recognition from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Society of Arts & Letters, and in the form of The Kentucky Arts Council's highest honor, The Al Smith Fellowship.
