Eighteen Asheville artists have created individually-designed mobiles using materials ranging from blown glass to bent aluminum to origami paper for the first annual MOBILES over Asheville gala. This fundraising event on Nov. 15th will support the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center. Mobiles, suspended in space, turning and spinning with the currents of the wind, are captivating and elegantly artful creations. MOBILES over Asheville gives Asheville artists and residents an opportunity to celebrate this extraordinary art form more fully.
“Having never made a mobile before, it’s been a design challenge that has opened up new possibilities for me and even inspired an entire new body of work” says Michael Hatch of Crucible Glass Works. His Crow House #1, Harry McDaniel’s Zephyr, Hertha Horwitz’ Movement Perpétuel and Carol Stangler’s Displaced Residents are just a few of the mobiles to be auctioned on Nov. 15th. Interestingly, they all have names that hint at the idea of movement through space.
Mobiles were popularized by the artist Alexander Calder in the 1920s as an outgrowth of his work with kinetic toys and wire sculpture. A visit in 1930 with the artist Piet Mondrian helped him make the shift into abstraction, and the modern mobile was born. Calder, who died in 1976, went on to have major museum shows at MOMA and the Whitney Museum and to create many large sculptures and commissions (mobiles and stabiles), which can be found worldwide.
Almost 50 years ago, Black Mountain College closed its doors, yet its recognized importance and impact on world culture still resonates. The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center offers a glimpse into the spirit of the revolutionary liberal arts college where learning was based upon a strong sense of community, free inquiry, creativity and experimental vision.
