Swannatopia is a group of experimental artists headquartered in Swannanoa, NC and residing throughout the Southeastern United States. Over the past decade, they have set out to blur the lines between “artist” and “participant,” to defamiliarize the familiar, to nurture an immersive, whimsical, thoughtful, experience of empowerment and offer a glimpse of what is possible. In this workshop, Swannatopia will explore BEE communication, putting collage in motion through a “NOW TIME” Hexagon Dance. Inspired by traditions of Square Dancing, the Hexagon Dance will be accompanied by musician Sally Anne Morgan.
This event is presented in conjunction with Black Mountain COLL(A)GE (May 29 – September 5, 2026), an exhibition exploring medium, method, and memory.
ELEMENTS of BMC Series
ELEMENTS OF BMC is a workshop series that explores the fundamental parts of creative practice at Black Mountain College, highlighting a range of artistic mediums and techniques. The series investigates the role of these elements in shaping the college’s legacy and lasting influence on contemporary art.
About the Artists
We, of Swannatopia, are a group of experimental artists who collaboratively produce and promote multigenerational, experiential productions, publications, exhibitions, events, and installations.
Over the past decade, we have set out to blur the lines between “artist” and “participant”, to defamiliarize the familiar, to nurture an immersive, whimsical, thoughtful, experience of empowerment and offer a glimpse of what is possible. To this end, our “Experimental Art Club” launched in 2021.
An experiment in and of itself, Experimental Art Club aims to facilitate the free exchange of knowledge, experience, tools and materials, while bringing the people together to “make stuff for fun!”. To date, our multigenerational list of collaborators numbers in the hundreds.
About Sally Anne Morgan
Sally Anne Morgan’s rich, intimate and modern music is cultivated with the seeds sown by folk, contemporary music and psychedelia. She plays haunting psychedelic Appalachian folk drone that invokes the rhododendron thickets, creeks and mountains of her local landscape in Western North Carolina. Sally plays with the Black Twig Pickers and House and Land, both groups that have been established as dedicated practitioners of traditional music re-cast and shaped by appreciation of modern improvisation, minimalism, microtonality and drone based music from across the globe. Thriving in the in-betweenness of two worlds, Sally is among those who prove that the exploration of the outmost bounds of sound and the exploration of the ancientness rooted in traditional music aren’t as different as one might think. She weaves her fiddle and banjo playing with voice, percussion, and other drone elements to create something that spans both the ecstatic abandon and the simple spaciousness that music can have. Also a visual artist, Sally does printmaking and drawing under the name Ratbee Press.
