This exhibition showcases the work of the lyrical abstract expressionist painter Dan Rice, a key figure in the ‘40s and ‘50s at Black Mountain College and in the art world centered on New York’s legendary Cedar Tavern. His friends included fellow artists de Kooning, Kline, Rothko, Pollock, Rauschenberg, and many others, along with poets such as Robert Creeley and Charles Olson. Rice’s work, among the best of his adventurous generation, is long overdue for re-evaluation and renewed recognition. Curated by Brian E. Butler

This show, mainly works on paper, will serve as the visual counterpoint to the BMCM+AC’s 6th annual conference, ReVIEWING BMC 6: The Writers of Black Mountain College.

Five people who studied painting with Dan Rice will explore his legacy: Christina Maile, artist and landscape architect; Ed Casey, renowned philosopher; Parviz Mohassel, philosopher and architect; Gwen Gunn, poet and playwright, is the fifth panelist; and Virginia Foster, Rice’s partner for more than 20 years. ReVIEWING Black Mountain College 6: The Writers of Black Mountain College
