One of the many events taking place during our upcoming ReVIEWING BMC 5 conference weekend (Oct. 11-13) is a book launch of a two-volume set published by Lorimer Press and funded by Lenoir-Rhyne University. Far from the Centers of Ambition grew out of Lenoir-Rhyne University’s 2008 “Spirit of Black Mountain College” celebration, the country’s only major acknowledgment of BMC’s 1933 opening on its 75th anniversary.

The first volume, Confluence, edited by poet Lee Ann Brown and series editor Rand Brandes, brings together the work of poets, writers, artists and essayists associated with the experimental college and with the 2008 celebration. Brown splits her time between Marshall and New York City, and Brandes directs the Lenoir-Rhyne University Visiting Writers Series. The second volume, Varve, captures the avant-garde poetry and art of Morganton native Ted Pope that inspired his Lenoir-Rhyne installation, “The Black Mountains of Mars.”

The launch, which will also feature a reading, will take place at BMCM+AC (56 Broadway St.) from 7:45-9:15 pm on Friday, Oct. 11, directly after the conference’s opening reception. This event is free and open to the public.
