The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) at 56 Broadway in downtown Asheville is pleased to announce MadHat's Poetry, Prose & Anything Goes: Episode 2 on Thursday, January 13th, from 7:00 – 9:00p.m. The first episode in November was a wonderful success. The writers scheduled to read during Episode 2 are Asheville residents Katherine Soniat, Robert Zachary, and Jeff Davis and Black Mountain resident David Madden. The cost for the evening is $5 for BMCM+AC members + students w/ID and $7 for all others.
Katherine Soniat's fifth collection of poems, The Swing Girl, is forthcoming from Louisiana State University Press in 2011 and A Raft, A Boat, A Bridge, from Dream Horse Press in 2012. A Shared Life won the Iowa Poetry Price and a Virginia Center for the Book Award. Alluvial was a finalist for The Library of Virginia Center for the Book Award, and Notes of Departure was the recipient of the Camden Poetry Prize given by the Walt Whitman Center for the Arts and Humanities. The Fire Setters is available through the Web del Sol’s Online Chapbook. Originally from New Orleans, she was on the faculty at Virginia Tech and Hollins College where she taught in the MFA Programs. Robert Zachary grew up in Anniston, Alabama during the years of “Jim Crow”. He was 12 when he joined the Civil Rights Movement, following the KKK's burning of the Freedom Riders' bus. Zachary began writing poetry and prose during the early 70’s, when he served in the military, as a means to organize GI's around the issues of the day. He is presently engaged in a project to write 490 love poems pertaining to current social, political and economic upheavals. Zachary lives in Asheville, where he works as a mediator, storyteller and poet, and continues to be active in human rights and peace efforts, intent on weaving his life experiences with his writing and storytelling, into a live poetic/musical setting that is both entertaining and mind changing.
Poet Jeff Davis attended UNC-Greensboro’s MFA program in creative writing, received his Master’s from the S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo, and apprenticed to a Kwakwaka’wakh carver of ceremonial masks and totem poles in Alert Bay, British Columbia, from 1971 to 1975. He later taught anthropology and history at UNC-Asheville. His poems have appeared in Lillabulero, Iron, Asheville Poetry Review, the Nantahala Review, and other magazines; books include Transits of Venus (2005), and NatureS: Selected Poems, 1972 – 2005 (2006). David Madden is the author of two collections of short stories, some of them prize winners, and nine novels, including The Suicide’s Wife, made into a movie in 1979, and Sharpshooter, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. His latest novel is Abducted by Circumstance; a movie adaptation is in the works. David Madden has written and edited over 40 nonfiction works. A book about his work is David Madden: A Writer for All Genres. He is Robert Penn Warren Professor of Creative Writing Emeritus, LSU, where he taught for 43 years. He lives in Black Mountain, NC. Series curator Carol Novack, founder of the non-profit arts organization MadHat, moved from a Greenwich Village apartment to a mountain in Asheville this May, and is busy coping with the elements.
