Three sets moving through electric guitar, banjo, tape, strings, synths, drone, and the stranger spaces that open up between them. Corey Parlamento approaches the guitar as both instrument and environment, letting small gestures, electronic interference, and slowly accumulating textures build into music that can feel as much like a place as a composition. Nathan Bowles pulls the banjo away from any fixed idea of tradition, setting its wood, wire, and rhythmic snap against homemade tape loops, wheezing keyboards, distortion, and repetition until old forms begin to blur at the edges. Lunar Creature, the Asheville duo of Meg Mulhearn and David Lynch, works at a different scale, building great slabs and washes of violin, guitar, synth, and electronics that can move from luminous suspension to something much heavier.
What connects the three sets is less a genre than a way of listening: a willingness to stay with a sound, worry at it, let it decay, repeat, distort, and change shape. Familiar instruments remain recognizable, but only just. Music of strings, electricity, friction, memory, and accumulated noise.
About the Performers:
Lunar Creature, the duo of David Lynch and Meg Mulhearn, is an evolving experiment of heavy and emotive textures featuring guitar, strings, synths, and sound recordings, and we have played around the world as a primarily live experience. As performers and composers, they have been involved in many releases and projects as solo artists, band members, and collaborators.
As interdisciplinary artists and musicians, their imprint and collection across forms, called Ephemera House, is a very human and joyously un-optimized attempt to acknowledge the past, present, and future of their creative lives. Lunar Creature has released two albums through the Ephemera House imprint, and is currently working on a collaboration with the experimental artist Spookstina.
Nathan Bowles (Setting, Nathan Bowles Trio, Black Twig Pickers, Pelt) is a multi-instrumentalist musician and teacher living in Durham, North Carolina. His work, both as an accomplished solo artist and as a sought-after ensemble player, explores the rugged country between the poles of Appalachian old-time traditions and ecstatic, minimalist drone. Although his recordings (including his newest solo release Seven Lefts) prominently feature his idiosyncratic approach to clawhammer banjo, Bowles is also widely recognized as a versatile, deep-in-the-pocket drummer; while he considers himself first and foremost a percussionist, banjo remains a natural extension of his percussive practice. His recent solo sets incorporate a mix of original and traditional banjo material with homemade-tape-loop/keyboard accompaniment.
Corey Parlamento is a guitarist and composer living in Asheville NC. Their solo electric guitar performances utilize extended technique and electronic manipulation to create beautiful, harsh, and captivating soundscapes.
