This lecture/presentation will highlight the early years of performance art and its origins at Black Mountain College. American artists in the 1950s sought to move beyond traditional artistic formats of painting and sculpture. Influenced by developments in the visual arts, music, dance and theater, they blurred the boundaries separating art from life by staging interactive events for their audiences, relying on their own bodies as a medium for their work, and exploring new media and technology. The experimental art that resulted paved the way for the wide range of performative practices used by contemporary artists today, including those performing at this year's Asheville Fringe Arts Festival.
