The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center is pleased to present The Golden Lecture/Demo with artist Phil Garret at 7:00 p.m. on May 10th. This presentation is a two-hour educational presentation on acrylic paints, gels and mediums: an advanced technical explanation of acrylics, and their inherent possibilities. It covers information about the different types of pigments, different viscosities and types of paints, grounds and color mixing. Various gels and mediums are demonstrated. Participants will learn how to extend paint to save money, and how to mix paints with gels to create unique textural surfaces. They’ll learn how to use different products to make surfaces for watercolors, graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, oil and soft pastels. Techniques for the use of iridescent and metallic paints will be shown. The lecture covers the lightfastness of pigments, proper acrylic priming techniques, and health and safety concerns.
A packet of literature and free samples of paint and gels will be available for all those who attend, but space is limited.
The Golden Lecture/Demo is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Pat Passlof: Selections 1948-2011.
Phil Garrett BIOGRAPHY
Phil Garrett did his undergraduate work at the University of South Carolina, and the Honolulu Academy, studying under Gabor Peterdi. He received his BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1974. His work is in numerous public and private collections, including the SC State Museum, Greenville County Museum and the State Collections of South Carolina and Hawaii. He is represented by Hodges-Taylor Gallery, Charlotte, North Carolina, and IF ART in Columbia South Carolina He has completed numerous artists’ residencies, taught painting, mural painting, printmaking, and watercolor, in Museum Schools and educational programs in the Southeast. He joined the Golden Artist Colors Working Artist Program eight years ago, and teaches acrylic painting in numerous venues. His prints and paintings are in public and Private collections in the USA, Europe and Japan. In October 2005, 2006 and 2007 he lectured and taught workshops on Acrylic Painting Methods in Art Schools in the cities of Osaka, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Fukuoka Japan sponsored by Golden Acrylic and Turner company of Osaka.
