Permanent Collection Overview:

BMCM+AC holds the largest museum collection specifically dedicated to the history and legacy of Black Mountain College (1933-1957), a legendary experiment in progressive interdisciplinary education that had a tremendous impact on modern and contemporary art, dance, theater, music, performance, and literature. Since the museum’s inception in 1993, it has been a collecting institution, acquiring a wide-ranging collection largely from donations by alumni, their family members, and friends. The total collection comprises approximately 4,000 items, in addition to about 15 linear feet of archival collections, not including institutional archives/records. Scholars, art lovers, curators, emerging artists, and inquiring minds have used BMCM+AC’s collection for research and inspiration since our inception in 1993.

Launched in 2021, the BMCM+AC Digital Collections Portal allows the public to access our permanent collection online. The portal not only houses object records for artwork and ephemera, but also provides searchable listings for our library collection and our past programs. As we continue to digitize more items, we will open the door for even more possibilities to learn and engage with BMC history.
